Art and Design Curriculum Rationale
Our high quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design inspired by a range of artists, architects and designers in history. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design through the sequenced, planned lessons. Our curriculum is adapted, designed and developed for all pupils to access it to their full potential. It explores how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our diverse nation.
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that by the end of Key stage one, all pupils can:
• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences and imagination creatively to design and make products.
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
•Develop a wide range of techniques by using colour, patter, texture, line, shape, form and space.
•Have been exposed to a range of artists, designers and make links to their own work.
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that by the end of Key stage Two, all pupils can:
• Create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
•Improve theri mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.
•Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Design and Technology Curriculum Rationale
Our Design and Technology Curriculum is to enable children to develop the skills they need for designing and making, through a range of creative and practical activities. The intent of our curriculum is to develop children’s ability to research, investigate, analyse and evaluate a range of products, applying their understanding and technical knowledge across a range of products and materials. It is with our intention that this subject will also develop the basic skills needed, to prepare and cook healthy food using seasonal knowledge and a range of techniques. Design and Technology brings learning to life. It is a motivating practical context for discovering English, mathematics, science, art, PSHE and Computing.
The national curriculum for design and technology, aims to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to develop:
Design - Understanding contexts users and purposes
Making – planning, Practical skills and techniques
Evaluating – Own ideas and products and existing ones
Food preparation and cookery
The National Curriculum for Design and Technology, aims to ensure that by the end of Key stage one pupils have the technical knowledge to:
•Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable
• Explore and use mechanisms [for example, levers, sliders, wheels and axles], in their products.
•Cooking and nutrition - use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes
•Understand where food comes from.
The National Curriculum for Design and Technology, aims to ensure that by the end of Key stage Two pupils have the technical knowledge to:
•apply their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures
•understand and use mechanical systems in their products [for example, gears, pulleys, cams, levers and linkages]
•understand and use electrical systems in their products [for example, series circuits incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors]
•Apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products.
•Cooking and nutrition - understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet
• Prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques
•Understand seasonality, and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.
