Maths Curriculum Rationale

At Windrush, our aim is for all learners to be confident mathematicians, with a sound understanding of Maths, equipped with the skills of calculation, reasoning and problem solving needed in life beyond school.  Our pupils understand the importance of mathematics, and are able to apply skills because of their confidence in their mathematical fluency.  Our children will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that they develop conceptual understanding alongside the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. We create cross curricular opportunities to develop pupils’ understanding and curiosity, and cover a wide range of mathematical knowledge.

Our curriculum builds on skills and understanding in a step-by-step and progressive way, always looking for links to build on children’s prior knowledge and understanding. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop a secure fluency, be able to reason mathematically and be competent in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We intend for our pupils to be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects. We want children to know that mathematics has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems; but also to know that it is not only necessary to their everyday life, but essential for financial literacy and most forms of employment for their future.

As our pupils progress, we intend for our pupils to acquire the ability to reason mathematically, have an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Above all, we intend for all our children to enjoy maths, seeing the beauty in the subject and how it runs through all aspects of life, this fascinating world they live in and beyond.
